Your First Reformer Pilates Class: What to Expect

Never tried Reformer Pilates before? No experience is necessary.

Let your instructor know it is your first class, and they will show you how to get on and off the Reformer safely, set your position and follow the exercises.

During your 50-minute class, your Certified Pilates Instructor guides you through Reformer exercises that work the whole body, with an emphasis on:

  • Core strength and control
  • Full-body strengthening and toning
  • Balance and stability
  • Mobility and flexibility
  • Posture and body awareness
  • Functional movement and coordination

Please arrive about 10 minutes early for your first class, which gives you time to check in and get familiar with the equipment.

Wear comfortable activewear and bring a water bottle. Grip socks are required for safety and hygiene, and are available to buy at the centre if you do not have a pair. All other equipment is provided.

Best forThose who are generally well and want to build fitness and strength on the ReformerThose managing an injury, pain, post-surgical recovery or a diagnosed condition

If you are recovering from an injury, experiencing pain, or working around a diagnosed condition, we recommend starting with Clinical Pilates. A Registered Physiotherapist assesses you first and builds your program around what the assessment finds.

If you are generally well and want to build strength and mobility, a Small Group Reformer Pilates class is a good place to start.

Who Reformer Pilates Is For

Beginners

You do not need any previous Pilates or Reformer experience to join. Our Reformer Pilates classes in Aurora are open to every level, and with only 2 participants your instructor has time to guide you on the equipment and adjust each exercise to your ability.

Anyone looking to get stronger

Reformer Pilates uses spring resistance and controlled movement to work the core, legs, glutes, back, arms and shoulders.

Clinical Pilates graduates

If you have finished a physiotherapy or Clinical Pilates program and want to keep building strength, a small group class can be a natural next step for suitable clients, in a supervised setting.

How many people are in a class?

Every Sunday class is limited to just 2 participants, so your instructor can give you real individual attention while you still train alongside someone else.

What equipment do the classes use?

Our classes use the Pilates Reformer, and all equipment is provided.

When are classes offered and how long are they?

Classes run every Sunday at 9:00 am, 10:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm, and each class is 50 minutes.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear comfortable activewear and bring a water bottle. Grip socks are required for safety and hygiene, and are available to buy at the centre before class if you do not have a pair. All other equipment is provided.

Where are the classes held?

Classes are held at Aurora North Medical Centre, 16015 Bayview Avenue, Unit 1, Building B, Aurora, Ontario L4G 3L4, with plenty of parking just outside. The location is convenient for clients from Aurora, Newmarket and York Region.

Are Small Group Reformer Pilates classes covered by insurance?

Small Group Reformer Pilates is a fitness and wellness service rather than physiotherapy, so it is not covered under standard physiotherapy benefits.

Some employers do offer a Health Spending Account, a Wellness Spending Account or a similar wellness benefit that reimburses eligible fitness expenses, and your classes may qualify. We recommend checking with your employer, benefits provider or plan administrator.

If you need Pilates-based rehabilitation from a Registered Physiotherapist, see Clinical Pilates. That is billed as physiotherapy, and coverage depends on your extended health plan.

Can I try one class before buying a package?

Yes. You can book a single class for $45 plus HST before committing to a package. If you decide to continue, the 10 and 20 session packages work out to less per class.

What is the difference between Reformer Pilates and Clinical Pilates?

Reformer Pilates here is a fitness class led by a Certified Pilates Instructor. Clinical Pilates is one-on-one physiotherapy led by a Registered Physiotherapist, and it begins with an assessment.

Can I join if I have an injury?

If you have an acute injury, significant pain or recent surgery, or you are simply unsure, we recommend booking a physiotherapy assessment first. A Registered Physiotherapist can help you decide whether Clinical Pilates or a fitness class is the better fit.

Can I participate if I am pregnant?

If you are pregnant, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider and contacting us before booking, particularly if you are new to Reformer Pilates. A physiotherapy assessment can also help set the right starting point.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your class. Cancellations inside 24 hours, and missed classes, are charged the full session fee or deducted from your package.

With only two spaces in each class, advance notice lets us offer your spot to someone else.

Do you offer Private or Semi-Private Reformer Pilates?

Yes. Private and Semi-Private sessions are available by appointment. See Traditional Pilates (Private and Semi-Private), or call or WhatsApp 647-627-3686 for availability and pricing.

What is the difference between Small Group and Semi-Private Reformer Pilates?

Both have a maximum of two participants, but they are booked differently. Small Group classes run at set Sunday times and you book an individual spot, while Semi-Private sessions are booked by appointment for two people who want to train together.
